Chicago Inter Soccer Starts Season Perfect

The Chicago Inter Soccer U17 girl's soccer team had a fantastic weekend of soccer as they competed in the Puma Championship College Showcase held in Rockford, IL. on April 10th and 11th. The team is based out of Homer Glen and made up of girls from Homer, Orland Park, Lockport, Tinley Park and surrounding suburbs.

The girl's first game was against the U18 Coon Rapids SA Heat from Minnesota (Ranked 4th in Minnesota). Inter started early and never stopped. Liz Wahl and Julie Gunnerson, Inter's two forwards started the scoring and with help from goals by Allie Lakie, Karlee Silver and Lacey Clarida, Inter went on to win big 8-0.

Next up for Chicago Inter was the U17 State Champions, Eclipse Select. The team showed why they are three time State Champs (ranked 27th in the country) and passed the ball around the field and attacked Inter's defense hard. They had some great opportunities but Inter's goalie Cortney Jerzy made some amazing stops to diminish their chances. The defense of Michelle Shultz, Lauren Labanawkas, Kiley Maday, and Brynn Feeley was tested early and often in the first 10 minutes but when Inter counter attacked and gave Wahl a nice through ball, it was quickly 1-0, Chicago Inter. The Eclipse continued to come at Inter hard but the defense bent, but never broke. Great plays were made by Cassie Pullia and Silver to stop several scoring chances. At the 31 minute mark, Lakie lined up to take a corner kick. She bent it around the goalie and hit the far post, which then hit off a charging Wahl's leg and off one of their defenders head into the goal. 2-0 Inter.

Five minutes later, Eclipse was attacking hard but Inter's defense once again stood it's ground and counter attacked and found Wahl streaking down the field one on one with the goalie. The goalie came out and Wahl made a quick cut and took a far post shot that skimmed the post and went wide left. 2-0 half time.

"We really wanted that third goal, " said Coach Rick Lakie. "We knew they had the wind the second half and they can score goals fast. It would have been a nice insurance goal. They were much bigger and stronger then us but we were in better shape and we played quick."

The second half started with the Eclipse attacking and Inter's defense bent, but never broke. The Eclipse kept attacking and Inter kept counter attacking. Outside midfielders Katie O'Brien, Stephanie Zurales and Alyssa Clarida did a great job of helping out on defense and starting the counter attack. Late in the game Wahl was sent a deep ball which she ran down and placed nicely in the back of the net to put the game out of reach.

"We held everything they threw at us and then got a goal late to put the game away," said Inter's trainer and Director of Coaching, Sena Halilovic. "I can't tell you how proud of these girls I am today."

Sunday morning Inter played a team from across the pond, Great Britain. The first 10 minutes the game was pretty even, both teams having chances but once Inter scored the first goal, they stepped it up a notch and played more aggressive and more physical. Lea Valley didn't seem to like that much and Inter had a 3-0 lead by half. The girls played even harder the second half to impress all the college coaches and ended up winning 7-0.

"This was a great weekend for Chicago Inter soccer. We played tough and all of our hard work paid off." said Halilovic. "Next weekend we head to West Des Moines, Iowa to do it again."
